Chromatic Visuals - Futurism meets Y2K: Screen Printing for OUSA

Futurism meets Y2K, what is this Chromatic visual trend that seems to be popping on t-shirts everywhere at the moment and how did we print it?

Chromatic visuals have seen a massive rise in popularity in fashion and graphic design of late. The colourful, more fun cousins of regular, one-colour fonts are adding a futuristic edge to the fashion world.

They use multiple colours to make text pop and add an extra layer of flair to words. Easily recognisable by metallic, reflective shapes and fluorescent, vibrant colours, the chrome craze is a classic case of old meets new. You could call it ‘retrofuturism’ as it takes both elements of early computer art from the 90s / Y2K and mixes it with modern digital art.

With chromatic fonts, the type designer can incorporate more details into the font file like texture, colour and gradients. These characteristics are “baked in” to the typeface adding movement to the static visuals.

With the ‘ORI 24’ design for OUSA by Offline Collective, the design was created using Cinema 4D, After Effects and Photoshop. The result; a liquid chrome effect with a retro futuristic finish.

We were able to translate the digital artwork to screenprint and recreate this look by using a metallic base under the print. A seven-colour water-based ink screenprint with each layer of colour printed building that 3D effect and futuristic gleam.

Printed on a black Alstyle tee and AS Colour relax hood the design gives a bold refelective aesthetic with a glossy chrome vibe.

Chromatic fonts are making text logos more exciting and designs more eye-catching. With visuals similar to pearly constellations, it’s not only futuristic, it’s otherworldly with a touch of extraterrestrial energy!

It seems no coincidence that in an age of artificial intelligence, chromatic visuals are firmly on trend. They’re a perfect blend of art and technology and combined with our skills as screenprinters can now be transposed onto a tee for a not-so-subtle statement that makes your brand stand out in the crowd. 🫧
