Print Room Creator Series - Meet the creator with Blake Gordon Art

In a nutshell, what is Blake Gordon Art, and how did it come to be?

I'm a self-employed Illustrator and Graphic designer, originally from the Kerikeri, Northland. I studied design at university, majoring in Illustration. Working various jobs both design and non design jobs after uni, all leading to the goal of being my own boss one day. Over the last few years, I have been trying to branch out with some engraving work on old Temuka ceramics and photography.

What does a “day in the life” look like for you at the moment?

The last 6 months I've been in Mexico. So trying to find the balance between being on holiday and working remotely overseas has been a new challenge, a good problem to have I know. Days go fast with the schedule of swim, work, swim, work, margarita and repeat.

We’re big fans of your aesthetic. Were there any heavy influences from your past that have shaped your practice today?

Thanks so much, it's hard to pick one particular artist or company but I'd say my first love for design came from a combination of early 2000s surf culture, tattoos and music. Think of brands like Volcom/Lost/Mayhem Surfboards, hand drawn, one colour bold logos. I'd prefer to spend my pocket money on stickers from the local surf shop vs sugary treats from the diary.

Print Room has had the pleasure of printing your artwork for the creator series… Tell us about about the idea behind your design.

Thanks again, has been so rad working with you. I work alot with outdoor/4x4 companies and was excited to work up something within this world of my own fruition. Being outdoors and camping is so much fun, I hoped the design would be worn by those who camp or aspire to camp. You don't need all the fancy gear to do it, hence the design featuring a legend out doing it with the bare minimum in terms of equipment.

When you’re not creating away, what else gets you going?

I enjoy surfing, camping, working on my truck, and photography. But realistically spend most of my time trying to spot land cruisers out in public.

Lastly, if you could go camping anywhere in the world right now. Where would it be?

One dream trip would be to get a Van and travel Japan. Stay there long enough to get snow and surf.
