Celebrating Success at the 2024 Pride in Print Awards.

We are stoked to share the news that Print Room has won two more prestigious awards at the 2024 Pride in Print Awards. Our dedication to innovation, quality, and sustainability in screen printing has been recognised with accolades that highlight our craftsmanship and creativity. The awards were given for two standout projects: one for Evil Twins and the other for Moon Under Water’s collab with Emporium Brewing for their Hungry Freaks beer. Here’s a closer look at the winning prints and what made them special.

Evil Twins: A perfect blend of artistry and technique

Award: Process Winner

Our first award-winning project was for Evil Twins, a New Zealand coffee and culture brand that combines high-grade coffee with streetwear, merch, and jewellery. Evil Twins is renowned for its unique aesthetic, which merges graffiti art with contemporary fashion. For this project, we were tasked with creating a hoodie that encapsulated the gritty, textured feel of a concrete wall—something that would resonate with the brand's urban art influence.

The Print:

• Garment: AS Colour Relax Hood - white marle
• Front Print: 3-colour screenprint using puff ink (black, white, grey)
• Back Print: 1-colour screenprint (black)

This project was particularly challenging due to the innovative use of puff ink to achieve a 3D effect that mimicked the texture of concrete. We employed a method of layering the puff inks and flashing them for different lengths of time to get them to rise to different heights. The different heights of puff ink created a distorted & bold look, with each hoodie being unique. The result was a piece that stood out, with subtle colour variations and height reactions that caught the judges' eyes.

Judges’ Comments: The judges praised our meticulous work, noting that the combination of subtle colour and height reactions delivered an excellent and deliberately distorted 3D effect. They described the project as a "perfectly produced job," a testament to the hard work and creativity of our team.

Hungry Freaks: Where Art Meets Beer

Award: Gold Winner

Our second award-winning project was a t-shirt for Christchurch's Moon Unit Brewing in collab with Kaikoura's Emporium Brewing, designed to launch their Hungry Freaks Pale Ale. This project allowed us to showcase our ability to bring intricate designs to life on fabric, marrying the worlds of craft beer and graphic art.

The Print:

• Garment: AS Colour Staple Tee - Purple
• Front Print: 5-colour screenprint (black, white, bright yellow-green, army green, deep blue grey)

The design was complex, featuring multiple colours and intricate details. The print required precise colour matching and layering to ensure that the final product was both visually striking and true to the original artwork. The deep, rich colours on the purple tee created a bold statement, perfectly capturing the essence of the collaboration.

Client Response: The response from both Evil Twins and Moon Unit Brewing was overwhelmingly positive. The clients were thrilled with the final products, praising the attention to detail and the high-quality finish that Print Room delivered. For Evil Twins, the puff ink effect was particularly well-received, as it perfectly reflected the texture of the concrete walls that are central to their brand identity.

Innovation and Sustainability: Our Commitment to Quality

At Print Room, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in screen printing while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability. For both projects, we used 100% water-based inks that are GOTS-certified, ensuring that our processes are as eco-friendly as possible. Water-based puff inks, while typically less voluminous than plastisol inks, were used to achieve a similar effect through careful calibration and precise technique.
